"Woo Baby!" cheered the many admirers of the auctionees as they strutted their stuff down the runway at 4th & B on May 19 for the first M.O.M.S. (Moms on a Mission, Single) Bachelor/Bachelorette Auction benefit. Celebrities and private citizens alike risked the potential embarrassment of low bids to help M.O.M.S., a non-profit organization for single moms (and custody dads).

Both auctionees and bidders were not disappointed with the selection of available dates. Among those strutting for the benefit of single moms included Channel 10’s Phoebe Chongchua, M.O.M.S. CEO Spencer Betz, Supermodel Brett Shuttleworth, Playboy Playmate D’Lisa, Mix 95.7’s Narayan Lewis (aka Monkeyboy), Chopper Eight’s Jason Austell, and San Diego Flash Soccer players Noah Gins and Anthony Ferace. Brett topped the highest bid list for the men at $580 and D’Lisa topped the list for the women at $510.

Phoebe and Mix 95.7’s morning DJ, Dave Smiley, emceed. Entertainment was provided by "The Blues Mothers" and "The Disco Pimps." Speaking of Dave Smiley, the question, "Why isn’t Dave Smiley up there as an auctioneer?" was heard from a number of women. The mystery remains unanswered.

Date packages ranged from a day in Julian via Harley bike ride to a weekend for two to Palm Springs. Other dates included a day to Disneyland (with or without the kids), tickets and backstage passes to the Jewel Concert, or dinner and an evening at Humphrey’s to see ‘a world famous comedian.’

In an effort to put the bachelors and bachelorettes at ease, M.O.M.S. founder Spencer Betz volunteered to be auctioned off first . A gentleman at the rear of the concert hall was the final bidder on the Palm Springs Weekend date that was her date package. "I was dumbfounded (and flattered) when the gentleman asked if I was the cheerleader. No, I’m sorry, she’s half my age and will be up for sale in a little while" Spencer told him. With that he opted to trade Spencer in for a chance to bid on the cheerleader. Smiling Spencer adds, "It’s pretty sad when you can’t even sell yourself and get a date!"

The money raised exceeded the expectations of the organization, Everyone was really excited and it is hoped by all that this is the first of many events of this type.
