The majority of us who are single parents are women. Most of us are not mechanics. So what do we do when we have a vehicle problem or question? I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m tired of calling my friend John or Kim’s husband Mike. It’s frustrating to get mixed information from different mechanics, some who may not have our best interest at heart.

Before starting this organization I was in advertising. I made many friends in the "industry" and one of those friends was Carlton. He owns Autopia Used Cars (in Escondido, California) I have to admit that I purchased two vehicles against Carlton’s advice and both cars ended up costing me a fortune in repair bills.

Carlton’s concern was not only my wallet, but my daughter’s safety as well. Today I drive a 1989 Sterling (yes, they warned me not to buy the Sterling), and I would give anything to get my money back on this car. Let's forget about the Sterling, it's a sore subject. Anyway, Carlton read an article in the newspaper about M.O.M.S. and called to applaud my efforts. He asked how he could be of help and I immediately asked this man who I trust, if Autopia would show its support to single moms and dads with a Q & A column that would enable single parents to get honest answers to their vehicle questions. He said yes!

Am I better off to trade my existing car in, or should I sell it myself?
The simple answer is a question-Do you have the time it might require to sell your vehicle? And, not everyone is comfortable with strangers coming to their home. Typically you can get more for your vehicle if you sell it yourself but sometimes the difference isn’t as much as you might think.

Tool Time Girl I’m not. How often do I need to rotate my car’s tires?
It’s recommended that tires be rotated every 5000 miles for the average vehicle. If your vehicle is 4 wheel drive every 3000 would be recommended. This affordable maintenance (usually free if you take your vehicle to the place you purchased your tires or $12 for all four is an average if you have to pay for the service.) will extend the life of your tires dramatically And always remember to check the air pressure once per month, another minor no cost maintenance procedure that will extend the life of your tire.

I’m torn! New car or used car! Which should I buy?
It is common knowledge the minute you drive a new car off the lot it’s worth thousands of dollars less than what you just paid for it. This is called depreciation. (Not to be confused with the lack of appreciation your former spouse had for you.) Used vehicles also depreciate, however most vehicles depreciate the most in the first three years. Purchasing a used vehicle allows you to save thousands in depreciation. And you get much more transportation for money with a good used car.

How do I know I’m getting a fair deal when purchasing a new or used vehicle?
Judge the dealership and the people who work for them. Talk to people who know them and have made a purchase at that dealership. The most important thing is a good quality car, second a fair price. Quality first, then fair price

As a single parent with a limited budget, is it really necessary to change my oil every 3000 miles?
No, technically you do not have to. However, doing so will maximize the life of your vehicles engine. If you want your car to last, it’s like a mini insurance policy.
